When I was brainstorming what to write about this week, the first idea that came to mind was Obama's reaction to the situation in Japan. The entire speech seemed okay; he is a very eloquent with, with excellent speaking skills. However, one line in my head stood out. The exact words escape me now, but the idea was essentially something like this: "I'm from Hawaii, so I have an understanding of the Japanese culture."
Uh, what?
This seemed completely irrelevant and almost made no sense. For a second, I pondered why he said this, but then I realized that the purpose of this comment was to gain an emotional reaction from the audience. He wanted to relate personally to the event and gain more credibility in his opinions and decisions regarding it. My first thought when I realized this was, "Typical politician." Is it just me, or do they all seem to make irrelevant comments just to get a reaction?
Yeah I don't think that comment was warrented at all. The number of problems Japan is now facing due to the earthquake I'm sure Obama never experienced during his time in Hawaii so for me it really doesn't do anything for his credibility
RăspundețiȘtergereI agree that the comment wasn't necessary although I do see the point of it. The upside for Obama is that, while the comment was not great, it wasn't a comment that was hurtful to his credibility or took away from his message.
RăspundețiȘtergereI agree that it was definitely a political line to appleal to the public's emotions. However, when I was in Hawaii (about 4 years ago) I noticed that there was a great number of Japanese people. On Waikiki, one could definitely see the influence Japanese culture has had on the Hawaii. So while it might be a line, I feel it might hold some truth.
RăspundețiȘtergereThat comment was strange- I guess he was trying to show the public how it affects him personally or how his connection to the situation will motivate him to take action. But yeah...it was weird.
RăspundețiȘtergereKaylee,
RăspundețiȘtergereI agree with you that the comment was a bit strange and a little bit of a stretch but his intentions were good. I think it was meant to convey a sense of personal grief like you said. I think if the comment was less awkward it would have been more effective.
